It can be easy to forget about the little things in life. It happens all the time. Some of us forget to take the stickers or tags off of clothing, or we forget the anniversaries of loved ones, or obvious things like remembering to grab our phones, watches, or keys. Another little thing we often forget to think about is termites. Because termites do not commonly invade our homes in the same way that other pests do, it can be easy to miss them, even when they are right under our noses--eating away at our investments. However, once or twice a year, termites become much easier to spot.
What are termite swarmers?
Every year, termites will do something called swarming. This is an act where fully mature termite colonies produce a special kind of termite called swarmers. These termite swarmers are unlike other worker termites in that they have wings, wings that allow them to scout. Scout for what? you may ask. Well, their main job is to find new locations to build new colonies, places that have plenty of food and a nice cozy patch of land to dig out a new home. Although this does make termites easier to spot, seeing these winged wood eaters around your home is not a good sign.
What It Means If You See Swarmers Around Your Home
The biggest problem with swarmers is not that they are flying, but rather what they represent. The severity of what they represent depends on one factor. Are they congregating inside your home or outside? If you see these pests outside your home, on a wall or crawling around on a source of wood, you can discern one thing, there is a fully mature colony nearby. (Hopefully, this colony is not already feeding on your home.)
Now, if you find termite swarmers congregating inside your home, this is a much more disturbing sign. It is an almost certain indication that a termite colony is already eating away at your home.
